It is dangerously cold in widespread areas of Colorado this morning, with below zero temperatures recorded overnight throughout the state. At 6 a.m. today Denver's temperature was -16 degrees and the wind chill factor dropped the temperature to -27 degrees. The big chill in Denver and other parts of Colorado started on Sunday with below freezing temperatures and the trend will continue through today. Denver's high temperature today is only expected to reach 19 degrees and the high in the city tomorrow should reach 29 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Yesterday's high temperature in Denver was in the single digits, topping out at 7 degrees.
The deep freeze in Denver at this time of year not even winter yet according to the calendar - is unusual but not unheard of. The record low for this date in Denver is -20 set in 1919, according to the weather service. The normal high temperature today in Denver is 45 degrees with the normal low temperature being 17 degrees. People throughout Colorado are struggling with the bone-chilling cold.

Metro Denver housing sales surge 23 percent in November
Metro Denver's housing market showed its first year-over-year improvement in 11 months, as the number of homes sold in November surged 23 percent over the same month in 2008, data released Tuesday showed. At least part of the increase was attributed to a rush by buyers to take advantage of the $8,000 federal tax credit for first-time homebuyers, originally set to expire at the end of November but later extended through the spring. But it wasn't just first-time buyers who returned to the market. The median sales price for condos and single-family homes increased, a sign that more-expensive properties were also selling well.
Last month, 3,599 homes sold, compared with 2,920 in November 2008. Sales last month were down 9.1 percent compared with the previous month, when 3,958 homes sold. The data covers previously owned homes and not new construction purchased directly from builders. The median price for a single-family home was $218,000, up 11.8 percent from the November 2008 price of $195,000 but down 1.8 percent from the October 2009 price of $222,000. The median price for condos increased to $135,900, up 4.5 percent from last year's $130,000. The price also was up 0.7 percent from October, when it was $135,000.

Colorado economy predicted to rebound quickly
Colorado, one of the last states to succumb to the U.S. recession, appears poised to be among the first states to escape its grasp, according to the University of Colorado at Boulder's leading economist.
"We may be one of the first states out," Richard Wobbekind told a gathering of clients of Denver-based financial-planning firm Sharkey, Howes & Javer on Thursday in Denver.
If technology and business spending fuel the recovery, as some analysts expect given anemic consumer spending, then Colorado is in a strong position to benefit, Wobbekind said.
The higher energy and commodity prices that accompany a recovery should benefit Colorado, especially the more rural areas in the state.
A broader U.S. recovery will also result in more goods being transported, which will benefit Colorado.
Retail sales in the state, which are expected to fall 10 percent this year, are expected to rise 4.4 percent next year, Wobbekind predicted.
Forecasts call for the state's job growth to return to a positive 0.4 percent next year, fourth-best among all states.
Colorado, which experienced negative job growth this year, ranked 29th among states on that measure after being among a handful of states to see job gains in 2008.
Any recovery will be sluggish at best, Wobbekind cautioned. But unlike some economists, he doesn't expect a second downturn or double-dip recession later in 2010 or 2011.
"We think we have enough momentum to stay positive," he said.
The Leeds Business Confidence Index, which measures expectations of business leaders in the state, also is showing more positive signs.
Business leaders said they expect to see sales increase next year, although increasing profits remain a more questionable prospect.

Desi man from Highlands Ranch killed in accident
A desi guy identified as Angshuman Chakraborty (age 34) was killed in an accident while driving on highway 285 on Sunday. His daughter Chandrayi (age 5) was airlifted from the accident and his wife Prathima suffered minor injuries from the crash, as reported by 7News.
