Most teens struggle to concentrate on their homework because of the temptations that surround them—video games, movies, cell phones and computers. But for the 1,567 students identified as homeless in the Denver Public Schools (DPS), it is the biting cold, subzero temperatures and hunger pains that keep them from concentrating on their studies.
DPS has seen a 16 percent increase in homeless students in the past year. Nearly half live in shelters with their families. Some live in crowded houses with dozens of strangers. Others cram into small motel rooms. Studies show that, without intervention, only one out of every four of these students will complete high school.
It was the plight of these homeless teens that inspired Sam Thomas to focus The Lion Project's energy, right here at home. Originally founded as a non-profit charity to advocate for humanitarian efforts in Third world nations, Thomas says he decided to expand the scope to include activities in
"I am not able to sleep at night, knowing that there are children on the streets, under the bridges trying to get shelter from the extreme cold weather," says Thomas.
